This tour will give us enough opportunity to try your hands on different genres of photography like – Wildlife, portraits, landscapes, nature, etc. in a unique and interesting part of India, the North-East.

Every evening, Saurabh, your photography guide, will give you short and interesting lessons and insight to use your camera in the best possible way to take great pictures.

If you are a learner and passionate about photography, this tour can be a great launch-pad to kick-start your passion.

Saurabh is a passionate traveller and photographer and he has received several national and international awards in photography and contributes regularly to various magazines. His pictures can be seen here.

He conducts weekend classes for beginners.

Trip Details

DATES: March 10 – March 17, 2012                        DURATION: 8 days 7 nights

GETTING THERE AND AWAY: The trip starts and ends at Guwahati, capital of the state of Assam in the North-eastern region of India. Guwahati is connected by flight to major metros in India.

DAY BY DAY PLAN

Day 1: Arrive at Guwahati, capital of the state of Assam. Drive to Kaziranga National Park (5 hours) and reach by late afternoon/early evening, as we will stop on the way at multiple spots for photography of rural scenery.

Day 2: Early morning Safari on elephant back to the National Park where you will see & have opportunity to photograph one-horned rhinos, wild Asiatic buffaloes, elephants as well as other flora and fauna unique to this part of the world.  Late morning we will do a jeep-safari into the National Park, during which you will see a number of bird species as well as mammals. After lunch we will visit tea-gardens in the area; you will see garden workers returning home in the evening.

Day 3: After breakfast, we will drive to the ferry point on the river Brahmaputra, and a ferry ride (1.5 hrs) to the river island of Majuli, said to be the largest river island in the world. Majuli has a confluence of Vaishnavite culture and Mising tribal culture – a village trail walk (after lunch) will let you explore both; there will be plenty of opportunities to observe and capture tribal life; the colorful weaves and clothes of the people make for wonderful portraits.

Day 4: Today we will visit the Sattra, or monasteries of the Vaishnavite sect of Hinduism.  A performance by the monks will be arranged; their energetic dance performance accompanied by drums and cymbals are a visual treat. You will also be given a guided tour of the Namghar (the prayer hall), and the living quarters of the monks. Post lunch we will drive to a unique village where the traditional art of mask-making is practiced; and will be able to observe the artisans at work.

Day 5:  Morning village walk, after breakfast take ferry back from Majuli to Jorhat (1.5 hrs), and go for a 3 hrs visit to a village where you will eat traditional tribal food and watch a dance by the Mising tribal people. Post lunch visit a tea plantation and a tea factory.

Day 6: Day trip to the capital of ancient Ahom kingdom, Sibsagar. Sibsagar has some beautiful architecture from Ahom days, including the Rang-ghar from where the Ahom kings used to enjoy performances, the Talatal Ghar ( or underground chambers), the Jai-dol and Shiv-dol, some ancient temples. Return to Jorhat for stay.

Day 7: After breakfast drive back to Guwahati, stopping at places along the way for photography. Once you reach Guwahati, evening we will walk around old part of Guwahati and photograph sights of the city. If time permits, we can stop at the Kamakhya temple.

Day 8: Departure.

 

COST: The per person cost for this trip is Rs.27,500. This includes your stay on a twin-sharing basis on good hand-picked accommodations, breakfast lunch and dinner, elephant and jeep safari, guide in Majuli village, ferry to Majuli, all transportation and, of course, photography sessions with Saurabh during your travel. Airfare is not included.
